What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session like?

  • As a mom myself, I know how important these photos are to you.  So please, try not to stress!  You will be so thankful that you documented this exciting chapter in life.
  • The session takes place in the comfort of your own home, where your baby (and you!) feels most at ease. 
  • To allow for the best light, and a sleepy baby, I like to schedule your session to start at 10am in the morning. 
  • To get the most out of your session, please plan a 30 minute buffer when getting ready so you are ready before I arrive and your session can start on time. We’ll want to take advantage of every minute we have together
  • When I first arrive, I will take a quick look around your home to determine the best locations with the most natural light.  Typically we will be in rooms such as the master bedroom, nursery or living room.
  • If it’s overcast or very cloudy that day, then your session will likely need to be rescheduled.
  • If there is a place in your home that is special to you, such as a favorite rocking chair etc, we will make sure to capture that as well.
  • There will be tons of sweet candid moments, with minimal posing and no wrapping or props (unless you have a special item or heirlooms that you would like to include in some photos, that is totally fine!)
  • The session is relaxed and unhurried, allowing plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles.
  • These sessions are laid back and flexible, the goal of the session is to capture the natural bond and love between you and your new baby in the comfort of your own home.

What do we wear?

  • The number one thing I tell mommas: Wear something you feel comfortable in!
  • For moms: Jeans or leggings with a comfy, flowy top or a dress, whatever feels best to you.
  • For dads: Solid T’s and basic Henleys photograph well.
  • Outfit changes: We’ll have plenty of time if you’d like to switch things up.
  • Colors: Light, neutral tones and muted solids (white, cream, tan, light gray, etc.) look great during lifestyle sessions.
  • Barefoot is best: If possible, having the whole family barefoot adds a relaxed, cozy feel.

For babies:

  • We’ll start with a simple onesie or a soft, one-piece outfit.
  • These sessions focused on natural, relaxed moments, no posing, wrapping, or props, just you and your baby as you are.

  • However if you love to wrap your baby in their favorite swaddle, you are more than welcome to do that!  Those are such cute photos!

  • If you’d like to change baby’s outfit, that’s totally fine, just keep in mind that some babies are more patient with outfit changes than others, so starting with an easy-to-remove outfit can help!

What do we need to do to prepare for our session?

  • Try to make sure your baby is well-fed before the session.  We find it best to try to feed them 15-20 minutes before I arrive unless you want me to photograph the feeding session.
  • A warm baby is a happy and comfortable baby!  Set the temp in your home a little higher than normal.  Babies tend to sleep more soundly when they are warmest.
  • Have any simple, meaningful items on hand that you would like to incorporate into the photos.
  • For the bedroom, solid white, cream or light colored bedding tends to photograph really well and puts the focus onto the baby and your family.
  • If you have any special requests or ideas for the session, feel free to let me know ahead of time so that I can make sure to make time to include those.
  • As a fellow mom, I completely understand how overwhelming it can be having a newborn, so please do not stress about cleaning your home!  I don’t care that there are dirty dishes in the sink or laundry piled up, trust me no judgement here, I have been there!
  • If you want to tidy up/declutter the rooms in your home with the most natural light that we will utilize most, that would be great, but not necessary.  Remember less is more!
  • Just a little heads-up, if we do choose to use your living room, nursery, or master bedroom, Anything on the side tables in those rooms will likely show up in your photos. If you’d rather not have certain items in the background, it’s a good idea to tidy up those spaces beforehand as well.
  • Open up all curtains and blinds to allow as much natural light as possible into your home.

How long will the session last?

  • A lifestyle newborn session typically lasts 90-120 minutes.
  • We allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles. Our goal is to create a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere..
  • We will normally start with family photos first, then move to baby by themselves. 
  • We want you to feel comfortable and at ease throughout the session, so we will work with you to create a schedule that works best for you and your family.
